Within the Chicago city limits, the 2009 poverty rate was estimated to be 21.6 percent of the population or 603,218 people, which is well above the national poverty rate of 14.3 percent.

For the same period, children were particularly hard hit. In Chicago, nearly one in three children lived in poverty. There were also more than 115,000 senior citizens in Chicago having incomes below 185 percent of the federal poverty threshold.
